Trackback & Pingback

I still don't quite understand trackback. I have one already and it seems to mean that someone linked to me and you can find the link in the "trackback" section of that entry. How it all happened? No clue. So now they are getting more complicated. Pingbacks. I didn't really understand most of this page, but it's probably rather interesting:
Pingback vs. Trackbak

And if someone can tell me how to fill in those "ping urls" field in Movable Type, I'd most appreciate it.

Heretic -

Here's a reallife example for you to try. That post up above where you reference my research on uranium will do.

1) Open MT and edit the entry in which you linked to my post.

2) There should be a box which says "URLs to ping". If there is not, click "customize the display of this page" and make sure there's a check mark next to "URLs to ping"

3) Now go to my site, and scroll down to the post you referenced, which I titled "Very Bad Things"

4) At the bottom of the post, there's a link that says "Trackback (2)." Click on it.

5) There's a URL there that says "Trackback URL for this entry". Select it, and copy-and-paste it into the "URLs to ping" box on your MT page.

6) Save your MT entry.

You're done! What you've just done is had your copy of MT send a message to my copy of MT, saying, "Hey! My post *here* referenced your post *there*".

Now if you check back on my page, you'll see the Trackback count incremented, and if you click on the Trackback link again, you'll see your post listed.

Hope that helps, and take care...

PS - Welcome to the neighborhood!

It turns out that I used that special link to create the post and it automatically pinged you...but I guess I get the idea.
